The Reprisals · A Novel

Last Words

Twenty-four hours. The last seven minutes. One choice.

A clock counts down from seven minutes. At zero it holds, then begins counting forward — the day did not end.

Thomas set a timer for twenty-four hours. When it reached zero, the plan was simple. He would be finished.

But the day kept handing him things to carry — a boy who once stood up for him, a girl who never knew the truth, the long arithmetic of being someone he was told not to be.

These are the last seven minutes of it.And then they weren't the last of anything.
